CCC Director, Prof Michael Keating, has been awarded the Principal’s Prize for Public Engagement with Research from Aberdeen University, where he is Professor of Politics.
The prize was presented by University Principal Professor Sir Ian Diamond in front of a capacity audience with broadcaster Gavin Esler at the University’s May Festival. Prof Keating took the overall prize, with Professor of Ecology, Xavier Lambin also recognised for outstanding achievement.
Professor Keating has made the interaction between academics, practitioners and the public a central part of his career for many years. The award reflects both that long term achievement and his exceptional level of engagement during last year’s referendum campaign. Speaking after the award ceremony, Prof Keating said, “The appetite for independent, evidence-based information during the referendum campaign was astonishing and appears to have caught the public mood going forward.”
Speaking of the 2015 prizes, Professor Diamond said: “Public engagement is embedded in our core activity at the University of Aberdeen and driven largely by the creativity and enthusiasm of our staff and students. I am delighted we have been able to recognise a small group from what was an extremely high calibre set of entries to this year’s competition.”
The public engagement with research prize is supported by the University of Aberdeen and the Wellcome Trust. More details on the work of the Public Engagement with Research Unit can be found at www.abdn.ac.uk/engage.
